Laboratory

Laboratory

Dierenkliniek De Beestenhoek has an advanced in-house laboratory at both locations where we can perform various blood and urine tests. This allows us to quickly and accurately assess your pet's health and start appropriate treatment if needed.

Blood tests

We can perform a wide range of blood tests, including a complete blood count and blood chemistry panels. These tests can give us information about blood cells, the function of organs such as liver and kidneys, hormonal levels and the presence of inflammation/infections. The advantage of the in-house laboratory is the speed of results and therefore a faster approach.

Urine tests

Besides blood tests, we can also perform urine tests directly at the practice. Urinalysis can provide a lot of information about your pet's health, such as kidney function, the presence of infections, the concentration of certain substances and more.

Pre-anaesthetic blood test

A pre-anaesthetic blood test is an important step prior to a planned anaesthetic for surgery on your pet. This type of blood test assesses your pet's general health status and can identify any underlying conditions that may pose a risk during anaesthesia. For example, it can help identify kidney or liver problems that may affect the safety of the procedure. Based on the results of the pre-anaesthetic blood test, the vet can carefully adjust the anaesthetic to minimise risks and provide the best care for your pet during the procedure. It is also possible that, based on the results, the vet may recommend further diagnostic testing before proceeding with anaesthesia.

Other laboratory tests

Besides blood and urine tests, we also perform microscopic examinations. Here we look at ear swabs and skin scrapings, among other things, for parasites, fungi and other infections that would otherwise not show up.

Unfortunately, not all tests can be done in the practice. If necessary, we use an external laboratory for this purpose. The results of these are often known within a few days and usually even within one day.
